GAP insurance, or Guaranteed Asset Protection insurance, covers the gap between what your car is worth and what you owe on it. Since new cars depreciate quickly, you may end up with a large difference between your car’s value and your remaining loan balance. If you’re in an accident and your car is totaled, your insurance will cover what your car is worth, but you’ll be stuck with covering the remaining balance of your loan — unless you have GAP insurance, that is.
