For years, the Toyota Tacoma has been one of the best-selling midsize pickup trucks in America. Drivers have always appreciated its easy handling, capabilities, and impressive longevity. In fact, while other pickups tend to lose their oomph at around 200,000 miles, some Tacomas have been known to last 300,000 miles. Put simply; a Tacoma is built to last and ready to take on whatever you have in store for it. The year 2024 was a particularly exciting year for Tacoma lovers because that is when Toyota introduced the new Trailhunter trim. As a Toyota dealer, we’ve been getting tons of inquiries about this adventurous new model.
The Trailhunter trim was designed for overlanding enthusiasts. A hobby for some and a lifestyle for others, overlanding involves a combination of off-roading and long-distance. It’s different from standard off-roading in that it involves traveling to a remote destination, where half the fun is the journey there. Overlanding can go on for weeks and involve covering hundreds of miles of ground for serious overlanding enthusiasts. If you have always loved the Toyota Tacoma and you love overlanding, then your dreams have come true in the Tacoma Trailhunter. Today, we will go over some of the highlights of this exciting new trim.
The Elevation and Protection You Need to Overland With Confidence
When you leave clean, paved roads for bumpy, messy, off-the-grid ones, you need two things: an elevated stance and protection over some of the more vulnerable parts of your pickup. The Tacoma Trailhunter has both. The Tacoma Trailhunter was designed with a high-mounted air intake. That means that if you need to ford through some water or go over particularly messy, boulder-littered terrain, you won’t need to worry about anything getting in the intake.
Additionally, the Tacoma Trailhunter enjoys massive 33-inch rugged terrain Goodyear tires that are ready to get you impressive traction on mud, sand and just about any off-road surface. Their large diameter, of course, also contributes to impressive ground clearance, which means terrific approach and departure angles and the power to travel down nearly any unpaved road.
It’s no secret that true overlanding lovers worry a bit about damage to the lower panels of their vehicles. From fallen tree branches to small boulders, there are plenty of items that can fly up and harm your car doors. That’s why the Tacoma Trailhunter has frame-mounted rock rails. Also called rock sliders, these protective elements are affixed to the sides of the truck and protect its lower panels from damage.
The off-road protection doesn’t stop there. The Trailhunter trim has high-strength underbody protection. A steel front skid plate will protect the front of your truck from damage while a steel transfer case protector and composite fuel tank protector cover these critical components of your pickup. There is even a steel rear differential protector so all of the parts of your truck you rely on to get you to, through, over and back from your destinations are protected.
A Specially Tuned Suspension
Overlanding calls for a very special type of suspension. A traditional off-road suspension would get half the job done by giving you a controlled ride in bumpy environments but you also need a suspension with good cargo carrying abilities. Why? Because serious overlanding might mean bringing all sorts of gear and even other smaller forms of transportation like dirt bikes, or kayaks in your truck. That’s why Tacoma gave the Trailhunter trim and iconic Old Man Emu suspension. With forged monotube shocks and external remote reservoirs, it combines the rugged abilities of a dedicated off-road suspension with the cargo capabilities of an overland one.
LED Lights for When the Stars Aren’t Shining Bright Enough
The idea behind overlanding is to stay off the grid and away from modern civilization as long as possible. That means you might find yourself relying on no more than the night stars for your light. The Tacoma Trailhunter is designed with convenient and strategically replaced LED lights around the truck to give you visibility when you’re out enjoying those remote but very dark destinations.
There are available LED lights in both the rear of the cab and inside the bed, helping you see the contents of your bed when you are, for example, rummaging through your cooler for your dinner supplies or rolling out your sleeping bed for a snooze under the stars. There are also lights integrated into the bed cab, providing exterior lighting around your truck, so you can create an illuminated campsite.
Tons of Compartments to Store Gear
A modular bed utility bar comes standard on this trim, giving you an additional way to attach gear and equipment to your truck. Plus, there are removable MOLLE panels for all those small tools like flashlights and wrenches. There is even a deck rail system with four adjustable tie-down cleats and four fixed cargo bed tie-down points, giving you plenty of ways to securely attach all of the equipment and gear you need for a successful overlanding trip.
A Hybrid Powertrain That Offers Power and Efficiency
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter will come standard with the i-FORCE Max 2.4L turbocharged in-line-4 hybrid powertrain, so you don’t have to choose between impressive horsepower and great fuel economy. You’ll enjoy terrific fuel economy for getting you across those long stretches of dirt roads, fields, off-road trails, and wherever else your overlanding adventures take you. And when you need to tow and accelerate, you can do so with confidence, too.
The hybrid powertrain actually has higher horsepower and torque figures than the traditional gas engine model, so you sacrifice no power by going the HEV route. You can also take joy in knowing that, by driving a hybrid, you’re doing your part to keep the air a little cleaner at the pristine natural destinations you visit. What’s more in the spirit of overlanding than that?
